When quarantine started, my mom started working from home and my sister came home, and I realized I was going to have a small problem… With so many people in the house, and my mom and sister both spending a lot of time in virtual meetings, I was going to have to be quiet. Being quiet is not something that comes naturally to me, and it especially put a damper on my singing and recording momentum.
So I improvised, and instead of recording in the spare moments when I’m home alone (now impossible), I put all my equipment in a box and got in the car. Recording in the car is honestly pretty awkward. I usually park in the empty parking lot of my old high school, which is already a little weird. Plus the parking lot is a popular cut through for walkers, so I always have at least one duck and cover moment to avoid prying eyes. You’ll see me looking very nervous in this video, and that is why.
“So Far Away” is a song by Carole King, off her album “Tapestry” — which is a masterpiece from start to finish. Carole King was one of those artists that got played a lot in my house growing up, and she was always one of my favorites. This song in particular felt like it fit this uncertain and scary time really well.
If there’s a particular song you would like to hear me cover, let me know in the comments! I’m always happy to take suggestions. While I have original music that is slowly making its way towards the light, covers are fun and easy to make, and I love doing them.
