This has been a big month for me, musically. I have been participating in a Recording-a-Day challenge, and have successfully recorded something every day. Very proud.
One of the most rewarding parts of this challenge has been pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I’ve recorded across genres, and worked on learning new production and editing skills. I’m planning on sharing a lot of music in the coming weeks, but I wanted to start with this Ty Dolla $ign cover — because nothing is further outside my comfort zone than this.
A few recording notes:
This is obviously only an excerpt of the original song, which you can listen to here.
The percussion you hear in the background was created by me drumming on the top of my preamp with my hand, the distinctive tone you hear is from my ring clicking on the metal surface. I then added reverb and a little compression to create the final sound.
The harmonies in this piece are not super complex. Once I made the decision about where to layer and where to let the melody line stand alone, adding in the harmonies went pretty quickly.
I originally decided to record this piece because I had been up late the night before and my voice was not sounding super great. Thus, hanging out in my lower growlier range was more comfortable.
I am impressed, honestly, at how well my voice adapted to the style of the piece. I sound nothing like Ty Dolla $ign so I thought I was going to sound really silly, but I think I pulled it off in a mellow, conversational way.
Please let me know your thoughts on this piece, and hit me up with suggestions for covers! You can leave a comment below, or reach out to me on Instagram (@gracethieme) or Twitter (@thecommonthieme).
Thanks so much for being here!
