These days I’m dressing for one event and one event only: The Crosswalk Catwalk.
I go into work at the office twice a week, I take the bus there and I take the bus back. I’m expected to look presentable in the office, on the off-chance that other faculty or staff are there – but presentable in a “jeans and a nice shirt” kind of way. Since it’s usually just me and maybe one other coworker there, I hadn’t been putting too much thought into my work outfits… And then daylight savings time ended.
Because I take the bus back from work, which is kind of slow, I don’t usually get to my stop until around 5:30 pm. With the end of daylight savings, it is pitch black by 5:30 pm. The bus stop consists of a single square of sidewalk, which is the only patch of sidewalk on that side of the (busy) road. Because there isn’t any pedestrian traffic on that side of the road, cars are only forced to stop when someone waiting at the bus stop requests a walk signal.
So imagine, if you will, rush hour traffic being brought to a standstill. Three lanes in each direction, a line of cars waiting to turn left, all waiting, all shining their headlights on one crosswalk. Six lanes of traffic is a pretty long walk when you’re in the limelight.
And man, I live for that shit. I strut the fuck out of that six lane runway. It’s the most exciting part of my week. My own little one-woman show. Shoulders back, chin high, eyes straight ahead. Give them something to write home about.
I noticed, after a few instances of this, that knowing I would have to make that six lane strut on the way home made me think differently about what I put on in the morning. I may hold a generic office job, but my anonymous commuter audience doesn’t know that. My goal? Let’s keep it that way 😉
What makes YOU feel alive in this pandemic world? Let me know, I’m thrill-seeking.
xoxo,
