As you may have noticed, I have been rather quiet here for the last week or so. I hope you read my last article, which has a variety of resources regarding the Black Lives Matter protests that are happening right now. During this revolutionary moment, I believe it is better for me to step aside and let the Black community tell their own story, rather than trying to filter it through my own worldview.
It’s possible that I will stay pretty quiet as this Revolution (hopefully) gains traction and spurs change, so as not to be a distraction. I want to make clear, however, that I know that the work of dismantling our racist society and creating a truly just one does not happen overnight. It does not even happen over the course of one revolutionary month. When the protesters have gone home, and new laws have been enacted, it will be up to us to carry the momentum of this movement forward into our daily lives.
This site was never meant to be political (if you want to read allll my political commentary go to TheCommonThieme.com). But racial justice is not political, it is about human rights. Human rights have a place in every conversation. So as this site goes forward, and we find ourselves talking about haircuts, or interviews, or music, know that we will also be talking about racial justice.
No one has an excuse to not be bringing this awareness into their work. Writing about fashion is a great place to highlight Black designers, and talking about careers is an opportunity to discuss racial disparities in the workplace. As someone who talks about music I have the chance to acknowledge the ways that Black musicians have shaped my musical style. We all need to contribute.
So as we go forward, expect that this conversation will continue. I am committed to being the best ally I can be in my own life, and this site is one facet of that commitment.
If you have not already read my article about Black Lives Matter, you can do so here. If you would like to subscribe to my newsletter, I will be writing more about my commitment to this goal there.
As always, thanks for being here.
